On the night of March 9, 1977, Francine Hughes poured gasoline around the bed where her former husband laid in his own drunken filth. She then lit a match, sending the bed along with her former husband up in flames. By the time fire fighters arrived to the home, Francine had driven to the county jail and announced hysterically, "I did it!" A year later at her trial, a jury of ten women and two men heard how Mickey Hughes had beaten his wife mercilessly for 14 years and had threatened her with death if she tried to leave him.
