Anyone who thinks that Sunday is a day of rent needs to spend a couple of hours in my living room. From the minute I am awakened by the shrill, ear piercing ring of the telephone, until the end of whatever premiership football match is showing on Sky, I am bombarded with a cacophony of sounds.
The person on the other end of the telephone is usually one of my brothers and, for some reason, my parents seem to be selectively deaf to the ringing that will inevitably drag me out of my deep, peaceful slumber. The conversations that take place nearly every Sunday morning begins with, “Oh Sorry! Did I just get you out of bed?”. The answer is usually very short and leaves them in no doubt of my ...

showered and dressed, I venture into the kitchen to see if there is a quick breakfast that can be prepared between the time I put the kettle on until the time it boils. My mum will be up to her armpits with potato and carrot peelings and there will be various pans bubbling and hissing on the stove. A chicken, a leg of lamb, or roast beef will be roasting away in the oven. My mum will launch into an in depth, analytical conversation which my caffeine free brain finds hard to understand, so a quick turnaround on the breakfast making is essential, not just for my brain but for all the food that might be ruined if her conversation is returned.
I go into the living room and settle into the settee with my tea and slightly toasted break, together with half the Amazonian Rainforest that is the Sunday papers.
