Florens was of the servile class, she did not have a choice in saying what she wanted or did not want to do and therefore had no control over her future. In addition, when Florens was first sold to Jacob Vaark by D’Ortega as a payment for the debt that he owed to Jacob; although Florens was terrified of being separated from her mother, of being sold as a slave, and was feeling hurt by the abandonment which she felt from her mother only sending her to become a slave, due to her fate of being a part of the servile class, she was not allowed to speak a word against the situation.
