William Shakespeare’s plays were published over 400 years ago, yet people today still read and analyze them. Why? Because the universal theme of love is timeless. In the comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare, many of the issues that are created by love are exhibited. Between love squares causing jealousy, the rough path of love creating happiness/unhappiness, and the madness produced from romantic love, Shakespeare is able to incorporate the main theme of love into all of his plays through conflicts of the characters. and is jealous that Demetrius is in love with Hermia rather than herself. The timeless aspect of envy caused by love can still be seen today, for example, on the nightly news. Often, one learns about when a husband kills another man for flirting with his wife. Despite the time period, love will always create conflicts that cause jealousy.
The majority of the unhappiness/happiness seen in this play stems from conflicts because of love. This can be seen when Lysander says, “The course of true love never did run smooth” (I.i.134). When he says this, Lysander is saying that even though there are many obstacles that will make one unhappy on the path of love, in the end they will be happy because true love will defeat all hurdles. This can be seen even today with humans’ love towards animals.
