A Midsummer Night's Dream: Love



In William Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he shows us that human love can bring about jealousy, anger and caring for one. Jealousy is seen throughout the play. Anger is brought about from jealously, and affection is seen as what a person will do for the that person they may love.
To begin with, jealousy are represented in Demetrius, Hermia, and Helena. Demetrius is jealous of Lysander because Hermia loves Lysander and not him. His jealousy leads him to go to Egeus, Hermia’s father, to ask for him to let him marry his daughter by using ancient laws. When the fairy juice is applied to Lysander and Demetrius and they begin to love Helena, Hermia becomes jealous of Helena because her love, Lysander, does not love her. The jealousy in these characters lead to anger.
Anger is shown in the characters above as they battle for the one they love. Demetrius and Lysander are in a struggle to see who can love the most. At first, they are fighting over Hermia, and then they are at it again over Helena. Lysander wants to fight Demetrius to see who can have Helena. “Now she holds me not: Now follow, if thou dar’st, to try whose right, Of thine or mine, is most in Helena.” (Act III, Scene II, Lines 35-7).
