In the battle for and against abortion rights, I take the position of pro-choice. I believe that a woman should have the right to govern what she does with her body. When faced with the decision, however, I do not know whether or not I could terminate my pregnancy. This is the way most people feel about abortion. Women who choose to abort their pregnancy rather than carry the fetus to term are not jumping at the chance to expel the baby from their womb. Many women lack sexual education, such as which contraceptives are available to them, where to buy them, and how to pay for birth control, which can be very expensive.(Small steps are being made to help with the latter problem. Recently, Maryland became the first state to offer insurance coverage for contraceptives.1) These women who are uninformed about the family planning options open to them are generally the same women who are from lower class societies, and therefore lack the money required for raising a child. Prenatal care is extremely expensive. Many doctor visits are required, which can quickly escalate in cost. Then there are the hospital fees for the actual childbirth, not to mention the costs for any complications that might arise. "Adolescents often receive inadequate prenatal care and give birth to approximately 50,000 low birthweight babies each year."2 These complications can lead to physical as well as emotional stress on the mother.
