A Street Car Named Desire: Blanche

A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams is a complicated psychological work that makes the reader wonder which character to pull for throughout the play. At times, Blanche comes across as an innocent victim of her past, and a complete witch the next line. Stanley can also be viewed as a product of environment who is unfairly treated by Blanche, but isn’t always quiet the gentleman himself. It seems as though Blanche is more to blame for her attitude and lies than Stanley for his occasional downfalls.

Blanche can be at times. It also shows that Blanche is clearly not the shy and timid young lady she tries to be later in the story. Blanche then shows that she is also hung-up on herself by asking Stella if she looks okay. Stella tells her that she looks fine and Blanche’s response is “you’ve put on some weight, yes, you’re just as plump as a little partridge!” Here again Blanche is guilty of putting herself on a petistal and trying to make herself look better than her surroundings. Throughout the beginning of the play the reader is certain that Blanche is superficial, selfish, and too proud of herself. She is not grateful for what Stella and Stanley have done for her in letting her stay in their home. Instead Blanche insults their home and lifestyle because they are not good enough for her.
