Eddie tells Catherine and Beatrice at the outset of the novel that he believes loyalty is very important and anybody who breaks the unwritten code deserves punishment. When he does betray the cousins he makes it quite clear that he feels he himself has been betrayed. Beatrice voices what Eddie does not want to hear, his unhealthy relationship with Catherine. It is this relationship, his jealousy of Rodolpho and his own tortured mind which, in the end, force him to abandon his loyalty to the cousins, himself and to his family.

Eddie’s frustration is embodied in these lines. He feels a desperation which he cannot fully verbalise but it is possible that the audience can sense what he is saying- that Catherine is rejecting Eddie who is a real man that “struggled” for her, unlike this effeminate boy. Here, Miller describes Eddie as a man, who is too proud, and cannot show emotion or put into words what he feels. We the readers know this as a fact through the play’s action and stage directions. In the conversation with Alfieri, Eddie ‘with a helpless but ironic gesture’ begins to show his true colours as he gets angry. From the moment that Eddie begins to converse in this way, it is clearly evident that this characteristic is one of the main reasons which leads to his downfall.
