Abraham Lincoln During The Civil War

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hardin (now Larue) County, Kentucky (“American President an Online Reference”). Growing up he acquired the nicknames Honest Abe, and Illinois rail-splitter. He was married to Mary Todd (“American President an Online Reference”). Together they had four children, but only one, Robert Todd Lincoln, lived to see adult-hood. He was the first president to have a beard. The civil war broke out almost as soon as he became president. Abraham Lincoln was a man with great passion for our country; he did much during his presidency to try and end slavery, while still holding our country together. The end result? As the war went on Lincoln asked for another forty-two thousand soldiers to enlist for another three year term (Hargrove 72). Lincoln said he felt almost ready to hang himself when the Union Army suffered thirteen thousand casualties during the battle of Shiloh (Hargrove 72). As the war with the South grew, Lincoln had to issue more and more emergency orders; he suspended habeas corpus and had navy blockade the southern ports (Hargrove 72). That was when he realized how long this war would really last. Lincoln did not agree with the war but he accepted it to save the Union (“Abraham Lincoln Sixteenth President 1861-1865”).
