In the 2011-2012 school year, more than 2.7 million Advanced Placement exams were given (LeBlanc). Advanced Placement tests allow a student to opt out of taking a similar course in college if they get a certain score on the test, depending on which subject they take. This can save time and money for the student. These students are prepared for the tests through classes that their high school offers. However, some high schools are too small to offer more than one or two AP courses. The schools do not have enough teachers, money, or students willing to participate. to enter their freshman year at the same level. There are many ways that smaller schools can provide their students with the same opportunities to take Advanced Placement tests.
The first solution is to utilize the technology that is available today. With technology comes the idea of online classes. If a student from a small school was to gain access to one of these courses, they could have the same opportunity to learn through this class as the students at bigger schools are getting. It may not be exactly the same format, but it would focus on the information that student needs to study rather than a student having to study for an AP test blindly. Schools can encourage students to take these online courses by providing them through the school. Having a period during the actual school day where these students do the coursework for that online class would be the most beneficial for the students.
