In the praiseworthy novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, the destructiveness of war, among other things, is a main focus; as evidenced in this statement from the forward: “It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war”. Valiant soldiers risked their lives physically. Most were injured; many died. Whether or not they suffered a physical injury, they sustained great emotional scars. Along with the deterioration of the men came the deterioration of the land, which in the end was left unwanted.

he saw with his young eyes: “Beside me a lance-corporal has his head torn off. He runs a few steps more while the blood spouts from his neck like a fountain” (pg.115). Another incredible moment is stated on page 117, it says, “I fall into an open belly on which lies a clean, new officer’s cap.” These physical and emotional terrors cannot be healed completely neither the ones who saw them nor the ones who received them.
