In Goblin Market, Christina Rossetti uses masks to describe the goblin men. One has a cat's face, one had a tail, one tramped at a rat's pace, one crawl like a snail, one like a wombat prowled obtuse and furry, and one like a ratel tumbled hurry-skurry. The type of masks Rossetti uses suggests more than just an animal figure but also suggests the goblin men to be deceiving types of characters. The cat, rat and snail are all animals that share a common thread of deception. The masks suggest characteristics of deceiving men and describe the type of character each individual man resembles.

The doubleness between Laura and Lizzie parallels the doubleness between Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Similar to Laura and Lizzie, Adam and Eve also had opposing desires, and Eve, similar to Laura, fell into temptation by eating the forbidden fruit. The parallel between the couples is also reinforced by the similar idea of a singular person. Adam and Eve suggest singularity because Eve was created from Adam, and Laura and Lizzie suggest singularity because of their uncanny resemblance.
Another parallel among the paired couples is between the goblin men and the serpent in the Garden of Eden. The goblin men, similar to the serpent, use persuasion to tempt the curious minded within the couples. Both the serpent and the goblin men serve as the symbols of evil within their stories.
