Analysis Of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery"

Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" is a short story with a memorable
and chilling plot. It tells the tale of a town in which the random and
systematic execution of a citizan has become a yearly occourrence. Beyond
the horror of the plot lies an even more powerful theam: "great evil can be
masked by mindless adherence to tradition."
Even though parts of the ritual remain, the story clearly implies
that the original purpose of the lottery has long been forgotten. "The
original parphernalia.....had been lost long ago..... , (510) " but ".....

Although some are beginning to question the continuation of the
lottery, the old-timers continue to cling rigidly to the necessity of
tradition. "They do say ..... that over in north village there talking of
giving up the lottery..... ," and "..... some places have already quit
lotteries..... (513)." When Old Man Warner, who represents the village
elders, heard people talking of giving up the lottery he harshly repermened
them. "..... pack of crazy fools.....next thing you know, they'll be
wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody working anymore..... (513)."
The author uses Old Man Warner to encarnate the voice of tradition. He is
also used to reiderate the story's theam by saying, ".....there's always
been a lottery..... (513)." Just because a tradition has always been
followed doesn't necessarily mean it is correct thing to do.
