Antigone: Differences and Similarities Between Antigone and Creon

In the play “Antigonê” by Sophocles, the martyr Antigonê and the tragic hero Creon show how one can be so similar yet so different at the same time. Antigonê is a self-less woman who performs a self-sacrificing deed of going against the king to honor her dead brother Polyneicês. Creon, the king and relative of Antigonê, forbids anyone to bury or pay tribute to Polyneicês. Regardless of Creon’s orders, Antigonê chooses to sacrifice herself for Polyneicês' honor and Creon decides to execute Antigonê for defying him.

Creon is characterized as an old, prideful man. Creon claims Eteoclês, Antigonê’s other dead brother, is a patriot and is buried because he fights for Thebes. However, Polyneicês is not buried because he rebels against Thebes. Creon leaves Polyneicês’ body to be eaten by dogs and vultures. Creon decides to execute Antigonê regardless of being related because he is too prideful to go back on his word. Antigonê’s is to be isolated in a vault until she dies. Later in the play, Creon decides to free her but it was too late. Creon foolishly, fearing the gods, orders his men to build Polyneicês a tomb first rather than freeing Antigonê.
