Are There Any Absolute Rights?

In the article “Are There Any Absolute Rights” Alan Gewirth contends that some rights are absolute in that they can never be justifiably infringed, i.e., overridden, in any circumstances. The rights here in question are claim-rights in that they are justified claims or entitlements to the carrying out of correlative duties, positive or negative. The question of existence of absolute rights demands for its adequate answer an explicit concern with criteria of justification. Gewirth claims that these criteria are ultimately based on the supreme principle of morality, the Principle of Generic Consistency (PGC).
