The cigarette companies began printing the Surgeon General’s warnings on the packages. An action the people have taken against the tobacco companies is law suits. The industry always had such a powerful defense helping them win so many suits. Their defense was that smokers assumed the risks of smoking and should bear the responsibility for it. The people were not having much luck in their fight against the tobacco companies.
Along with the people’s fight against the tobacco companies, the states are now helping take action. The number of states suing the industry has climbed to twenty-two. By the states suing in place of the smokers, they could overpower the strong defense the industry has had in the past. In Florida’s law suit, the companies will pay the state an initial $550 million and another $200 million for an anti-smoking campaign.
