Baroque is a style of art that initially started in Italy. This artistic style later spread to other countries such as Spain, Austria, and France in the periods of the following the 17th century. The spread of Baroque was facilitated by its use by the Pope and the Catholic rulers. They further spread it to monasteries around other European countries. During the periods of the 17th and 18th centuries many artists across Europe would go on to adopt this style of art due to the flamboyant and creative way it evoked emotions beautifully and artistically. The purpose of using Baroque paintings was to enable followers to feel and understand the teachings of the church (Andrews, 2016). One of the most famous paintings is the "calling of St. Matthew "which was done by the famous artist Caravaggio. This artwork displays a group of men who are sitting around looking at Christ with his arm directed towards St. Mathew. The light also follows the direction that Christ is pointing and reveals the gestures of the men gathered around him depicting the emergence and arrival of the divine.
