It is inevitable that conflict will arise in our daily lives. The questionable part is how to respond to such confrontation. The Lawyer distinguished as the narrator of “Bartleby the Scrivener: A Story of Wall-Street (1853)” by Herman Melville, has difficulty confronting conflicts between his workers and himself. He is continually dismissing issues to avoid confrontation with his employees.
The narrator, whom is a lawyer on Wall Street in New York City, has several employees working in his office. The main character, Bartleby, is employed by the narrator as a scrivener. the assignments given by his employer. He did not create a scene or disrespect the Lawyer by being rude, he simply stated “I would prefer not to.” Of course, this caught the Lawyer off guard and he did not know how to react to such a response. The Lawyer would rather not to be perceived as a stubborn, unapproachable supervisor to his employees, so he does not confront Bartleby’s retort. The decision of the Lawyer to not address this problem immediately creates future situations.
The Lawyer persistently notifies Bartleby of his obligations of copying, but Bartleby repeatedly replies with the same answer of “I would prefer not to.” The reader is able to obtain a sense of depression and neglect from Bartleby. This behavior sets a poor example for fellow employees, not to mention the mood of the office.
