Beowulf

To begin, the epic poem “Beowulf” is written by missionaries during the Anglo Saxon period, in the year 700, after the fall of the Roman Empire. Beowulf was a warrior who continued his efforts in defeating monster’s and sea creatures for his kingdom. What is an archetypal hero? An archetypal hero is a main character in a long narrative poem which use’s very old imaginative pattern’s that appear in literature of different cultures and time period’s. Beowulf expresses the archetypal hero traits bravery/strength, loyalty, and always trying to prove himself wrong while he’s on an adventure. Beowulf interprets all of these qualities as he goes throughout the story.

Another example is “that the monster’s scorn of men is so great that he needs no weapon and fears none.” (167-168) This line exemplifies the fact that since Grendal does not use weapons, Beowulf will not either. Because he wants to show that he doesn’t fear Grendal, he only use’s his bare hands. This shows that Beowulf is very powerful and doesn’t need the use of a weapon to show that. The last example which shows strength/bravery is “lucky or not nine was the number of sea-huge monsters I killed.” (307-308). Beowulf kill’s not just one, but nine sea monsters this tells us that Beowulf is very strong and is not scared of anything.

Another reason Beowulf is an archetypal hero is he shows loyalty. For example, knowing that Grendal has been terrorizing the Danes for 12 years motivates him to fight for people he doesn’t even know. The author say’s “my purpose was this: to win the good will of your people or die in battle.” (110) This shows that he is willing ...
