It's no secret that cattle and Texas go together like peanut butter and jelly. For hundreds of years livestock has played a key role in the development of the lone star state. The herds keep thousands of people employed in multiple branches of the agriculture industry and keeps food on the tables of even more. Amongst the dozens of cattle breeds that roam Texas the Angus, Brahman, and Texas Longhorn have become most prevalent due to their unique characteristics.

Another breed is the Brahman, which is well known and easily identifiable by the bulbous lump that grows on the upper shoulder region. There are a few characteristics that make the breed so successful in the Texas climate: a hide covered in sweat glandes, a high resistance to ticks, and a near immunity to pink eye or eye cancer (Brahman Cattle). The breed was introduced to the United States in single digit numbers but over the course of more than a century the population boomed. It was recorded in 1982 by the Breeders Association headquarters in Houston that over 350,000 Brahman were registered.
Last but not least is the Texas Longhorn, an iconic animal partially due to the fact that it is the mascot for The University of Texas.
