was one of the great evangelists of the twentieth century. People traveled far and packed out his tabernacles of saw dust floors. He was both praised and criticized by the media throughout his career as a revival preacher. The media greatly influenced the public's perception of .
Billy was put into an orphanage at the age of ten because his widowed mother couldn't feed him. He played sandlot baseball and discovered he had a talent for it. In 1883 Billy was signed to play for the Chicago White Stockings, being paid $500 a month. Billy soon became a famous player for the White Stockings. He preached about Christ, morality, hard work, the wickedness of alcohol, and patriotism. During World War I, Billy preached mostly on patriotism.
