In a time when racism and oppression was still evident and being questioned, came about Blazing Saddles, a Western comedy film produced by Mel Brooks. The production of this movie was not meant to offend people, but in fact have the opposite effect, change attitudes. With the concept of racism and oppression being a serious matter, Mel Brooks uses structures and techniques of comedy to bring about a serious message, while trying not to offend his audience. LePetomane, played by Mel Brooks, places Bart, a black railroad worker who was meant to be hanged, as sheriff of Rock Ridge, in hopes to drive the townspeople out. The film focuses on the the antagonists attempt to capture Rock Ridge, while Bart, the black sheriff tries to stop them and save the day. Comedy is used to enhance the plot as well as enhance the message being sent about racism and oppression.
The first structure/technique of comedy that is evident in the film, is the use of Role Reversals. Mel Brooks uses role reversals by portraying the while characters as stupid and uneducated, especially of white's whom are higher up in society. Hedly Lamarr, Governer LePetomane, and Taggart are examples of characters portrayed as stupid and corrupt. On the contrast, the black characters are portrayed as smarter and more sophisticated for example, Bart.
