Antonio, as a young hispanic boy,about the age of nine, is constantly prodded by his parents to choose the type of lifestyle he one day would fulfill. The only problem is that his mother and father's visions about the ideal calling are total opposites. His mother was raised a religious housewife, whose people farmed on the llano and his father's culture roamed the earth letting life take them on it's predestined, but often suprise obsticles. Because of this disagreement between his parents, throughout the novel Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio must decide what is more important to him, personal happiness or betrayal of those he loves. Or does he? As the story unfolds, he begins to realize ...

ways keeps his spirit confined, unlike the free energy of his ancestors. He wants his son to sieze the day, sharing in the same expieriences he had during his earlier years.
"We lived two different lives, your mother and I. I came from a people who held the wind as brother, because he is free, and the horse as companion because he is the living fleeting wind -- and your mother, well she came from the men who hold the earth steady as a brother. They are steady, settled people. We have been at odds all of our lives. Perhaps it is time we give up the old differences."
Switching positions to understand a conflictin point of view is key in every compromise, including the difference in the relationship of his parents to society. His parents lack this vantage point which leads them to insufficient understanding and compassion for the others ancestory. In order to appreciate and accept variety you must have sufficient knowledge and expierience with it.
