one feeling guilty, as Lady Macbeth begins to show her regret. She is seen sleep walking, trying to wash blood off her hands. She eventually commits suicide, as the guilt has driven her to that point.
While blood is a symbol of guilt more than once in the play, it is also used as a symbol of life. Blood, outside of this play, is quite often used to symbolize life. People might say, “There is new blood here tonight.” They mean, “There is a new person here tonight.” After the discovery of Duncan’s murder, Macbeth says to Duncan’s two sons, “The spring, the head, the fountain of your blood is stopped” (2.3 95-97). When Macbeth says, “The fountain of your blood is stopped”, he is saying the source where your life came from is gone. Blood here symbolizes the life of Duncan and his descendants.
With blood being a symbolic piece of the play, it is used numerously throughout the play. From when Duncan states, “What bloody man is that?”(1.2 Line 1), blood is constantly being used. ...
