Bulldozing Our Past


The article I read painted a vivid picture of how the government
does not value our poverty stricken population and is extremely
discriminatory against hard working Americans. In their view, it is too
expensive to revamp all of the historical buildings of our city, so they
will offer monetary assistance to only those who meet their financial
criteria. A 79 year old women lived in a run down large house in the forth
ward of Houston. She had once been a married, vibrant, blue-collar worker
in her younger years living in one of the most prestigious communities
Houston had to offer. After 50 years of marriage her husband died and the
neighborhood’s prestige had faded. The community was ...

the owner’s of the home
were not financially in the poverty zone. They actually were making above
$35,000, which did not allow them access to government funding. Even
though the $35,000, before taxes, was to feed a husband, wife, two
children, pay mortgage, insurance, taxes, utilities, college and buy
clothes. The district insisted that the owners should have enough money
to remodel the home. The owner’s however did not have the extra money.
They discovered it would be cheaper to take a bulldozer to the house and
level it, leaving their 79-year-old tenant homeless.

There are numerous socioeconomical levels. Unfortunately,
societies view of the wealthy and poor are extremely different then the
government’s definitions. A white-collared worker might make $30,000,
live in a middle to lower income home. The problem is because the poverty
level is $14,000 he does not qualify for any government assistance. They
do not take into consideration on that making $30,000 a year; ...
