Canada’s Role in the Battle of Somme

All four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought during the Battle of Somme. They were on the left flank of General Henry Rawlinson’s British fourth army. They had been asked to capture the town of Courcelette, France. Courcelette had been a strategic stronghold for the German’s. On September 15 the Canadian Corps attacked a 2200 yard sector that was west of Courcelette. They were successful, and, by 8:00 in the morning, started to go to Courcelette. German sent out many counter attacks toward the Canadians, but, with the help of a fourth division, fought them off and delivered multiple attacks on their own. While the Canadians fight in the Battle of Somme is often overshadowed by the victory in the Battle at Vimy Ridge, Canadian soldiers, “displayed the same bravery and determination in the deadly fighting at the Battle of the Somme.” Although the Battle of Somme accounted for over 24 000 Canadian casualties, The Canadian Corps had cemented their reputation as a formidable assault force. Many hard lessons were learned during the battle. Prime Minister Lloyd George commented on the Canadian Corps’ performance, saying proudly, “The Canadians played a part of such distinction that thenceforward they were marked out as shock troops; for the remainder of the war they were brought along to head the assault in one great battle after another. Whenever the Germans found the Canadian Corps coming into the line they prepared for the worst.” (ACC, Wikipedia)
