Candide's Struggles

In Voltaire’s Candide, the main character Candide is faced with many struggles starting with his banishment from his home by the Baron. Candide fell in love with Cunegonde the Baron’s daughter and once they kissed, the baron had him sent away at which point Candide joined the Bulgar army. After joining the army he was thought to be a deserter and was brutally flogged. He then went on to leave the army after being beaten up by the army and ran into Pangloss who had contracted Syphilis. Pangloss informed him that Cunegonde and her family had been murdered by the Bulgars. Candide then starts to travel with Pangloss and they board a ship to Lisbon. Cunegonde then accepts marriage to Don Fernando after she had planned to marry Candide. She did this only fro the money. Little did Candide know but authorities were searching for him because he was the murderer of the Grand Inquisitor. Candide flees to the Jesuit territory which he finds out is being controlled by the baron who is Candide’s brother. He announces his wish to marry Cunegonde but the baron will not have it. Candide stabs the baron and he and Cacambo, his new valet escape to the wilderness where they are almost eaten by the Biglugs. Candide and Cacambo then travel to El Dorado where they find gold and jewels. El Dorado, a utopian country is not good enough for Candide as he wants to be with Cunegonde so they leave with sheep and valuables. Part of the fortune was sent with Cacambo to buy Cunegonde from Don Fernando and a merchant named Vanderdender steals most of the fortune.
