Capital City Airport in Pennsylvania has a long and interesting history. The airport first emerged in the early 1930's and quickly grew to become an important commercial aviation centre. In the 1940s the airport was important in the war effort, while the 1950s and 1960s saw a continued growth in commercial services. The facility underwent a major refurbishment in the 1990s, and today Capital City Airport is a thriving center that plays an important role in the regional economy.

Central Pennsylvania's Capital City Airport grew out of the continuing growth of the aviation industry in the United States. Capital City Airport, located in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, began as a civilian airport, unlike many other older American airports. In the summer of 1930, the airport was built, consisting of two runways, a hangar, and an aircraft apron. The airport was owned by Capital Landing Field Company (Harrisburg Jet Center). The airport quickly became a commercial service airport for the community of Harrisburg (PDEP; HIA).
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania bought the airport in 1934, and officially named it Harrisburg-York State Airport. In this guise, the airport acted as a stopover on long routes, including the route from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, as well as providing service to the central Pennsylvania region.
