Every human being is forced to go through the teenager stage at some point of time in their life, but how does each person react towards certain situations? Holden Caulfield in J.D. This corruption caused by the environment causes him to have a negative impression on everyone and label them as “phonies,” but they do not realize that they have been degraded. (Roth 465). The same scenario applies to Holden, “by the change occurring in the state of one’s breath as he matures,” in which his tainted breath of cigarettes and liquor implies that his spirit has been corrupted.
