The majority of residents living in the villages of Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwistle are likely to be in favour of a bypass. A recent opinion poll showed an overwhelming majority of 98% of those questioned living in the local area were in support of the proposed bypass.
Living on Market Street, Hollingworth without a bypass is a nightmare. The busy road is only a couple of metres away from my front door. Even through the walls and double glazing I can still hear the traffic in the back rooms of my house. Sometimes I can’t sleep at night because of the constant thunder of heavy lorries along the road. It would be dangerous, not only getting in and out of the car, but also leaving the car on the road since drivers have been known to hit stationary vehicles.
The amount of air pollution means that I can’t open the windows because the house fills with fumes. On a dry day the house and windows are covered in dust, and if the windows are open the whole house becomes covered in dust. Wet days bring mud splattered doors and dirt speckled windows.
Home improvements are very difficult because of the traffic, it is problematical for the delivery of building materials because vehicles can’t pull up outside and even if they do manage to pull along side the house they cause more traffic chaos because drivers have to find a way around.
