Introduction

Aside from the Vietnam War the Civil Rights Movement and Women’s liberation Movement were two great catalysts for social protest in the sixties. African Americans did not have any rights before the Civil Rights Movement. When the Civil Rights Movement started in the 1960’s, many Black Americans had been working to expand the economic and political rights for nearly a decade. This paper will discuss the Civil Rights Movement and how the public and media covered it. The public opinion and media coverage in the 1960’s was not only covered in newspapers, it was also covered by FMm Radio. FmM radio and television became a popular means for news, politics, music, and consumerism. Television media coverage of speeches, political races, protest and current events were also brought to reality nationwide. In the 1960’s messages of the Civil Rights Movement was spread through television to the public.
The most influential and well known leader of the Civil Rights Movement was Dr. Martin Luther King. He was president of the Southern Christian Leadership Council, who promoted non- violence confrontations with the police and white majority in other to effect the social change.
