Civil War

The Civil War was an extremely difficult time for all Americans. Many people lost loved ones including sons, daughters, aunts, uncles, and cousins. However, the loss of losing a husband or wife is one that prevails over all others. A husband and wife have a bond that is stronger than any other bond known to mankind. During the time of the Civil War, many husbands and wives were separated. Husbands went off into battle while wives stayed at home to tend to the children and watch over the house. The perseverance that these men and women had in facing the hardships of that time are true examples of how determination and courage can get anyone through anything.

in the care of his relatives. Samuel’s account of the war is very much focused on the Battle at Gettysburg. The Battle at Gettysburg took more American lives than any other battle during the Civil War and is sometimes considered the turning point of the war. Reading Samuel’s diary gives you a great insight into how a battle comes to be. When you begin to read the first entry on June 30, 1863, you get the feeling that not a lot is going on. “Lieut Barnes and I got a fine supper at Mr. Bingamins.” In my opinion, I would have never guessed that soldiers during the Civil War would be able to sit down and have a nice meal with one another. So many historical textbooks interpret the war as a time of complete and utter disarray for the soldiers. That may be the case for others but this example of having a nice meal with a fellow soldier contradicts most of what I have heard about times during the Civil War. his letter to his father, Henry explains the fact that he and his fellow soldiers are going through an extremely rough time. Conditions are bad, they are cold and without much food and water. He also goes on to explain a battle that he had just endured. “We had one of the hardest fights that we ever had since the war begun. General Jackson has lost one of his arms and now got the pneumonia. He is not expected to live.” This excerpt goes on to explain how they have lost almost 20,000 men in that one battle.
