no use now to such an old man, "I wouldn't want to be that old. An old man is a nasty thing" (Hemingway pp). The older waiter replies, "This old man is clean. He drinks without spilling. Even now, drunk. Look at him" (Hemingway pp). The younger waiter has no patience or tolerance for the old man. He simply wants him out so he can go home.
When the old man motions for yet another drink, the younger waiter states firmly "No more tonight. Close now" (Hemingway pp). As the old man totters down the street, the waiters continue dialogue while cleaning the caf? for closing. To point out the differences in their lives, the older waiter say, "You have youth, confidence, and a job...You have everything" (Hemingway pp). He says that he is always reluctant to close at night for fear that there is someone who needs the caf?, "a clean and pleasant caf?" (Hemingway pp). The older waiter empathized with the old deaf man.
