Introduction

There are a number of memorials throughout the country which honor people who died due to horrendous situations. It is important to compare the Vietnam Memorial with the soon to be constructed World Trade Center Memorial to gain a better understanding of how these people are honored.

Through this competition, the jury selected a design for a single memorial that remembers and honors all loss of life on September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993 (http://www.wtcsitememorial.org/about.html)." The LMDC received 5,201 submissions from 13,683 registrants in 63 countries throughout the world.
The submitted concepts had to be "consistent with the Memorial Mission Statement and Program which was developed by committees which included family members, residents, survivors, first responders, arts and architecture professionals and community leaders. These committees premised their work on the initial memorial mission statement and program developed by the LMDC Families Advisory Council (http://www.wtcsitememorial.org/about.html)." The public was invited to critique the documents, and suggestions made led to revisions of these documents.
