Getting over a traumatic experience can be troubling to anyone, especially when the experience deals with a close family member or friend. Whether the problem is your parents beating you, the fact that you don’t have any friends, or even if you just feel unloved in your life, the product can be just as destructive as the product of ’s problems in Judith Guest’s Ordinary People. The novel begins with a very routine, troubled boy who has recently tried to kill himself because of his brother’s death in a boating accident, and ends with a boy on the path to normalcy. The events of the story also prove him as a dynamic character.

he still keeps the anger to himself. Yet another example of Conrad as a troubled character is his first meeting with Berger. He basically keeps to himself because it was his father’s idea to visit a psychiatrist and not his. Berger, patient doctor, however, is willing to keep at it until Conrad finally gives in.
As the story progresses, there are many elements of change that switch Conrad from the depressed state to the better state of mind. For instance, the girl at the library tells him that he is an attractive guy. “’I embarrassed you in there, didn’t I? I’m sorry.’ She shrugs her shoulders. ‘You’re very good-looking. But I’m sure you already knew that.’” (page 124) After this event, Conrad goes home and looks into the mirror. He realizes to himself that maybe he isn’t so bad after all. The next element of change is Jeannine Pratt. She begins to talk to him more, and after a while he finally asks her on a date. This starts Conrad down the road to recovery just ...
