Creative Writing: One More Basket

Moreno Valley was Jenny Rinke's new home now and making friends was
difficult for her. She put most of her energy into getting straight A's.
The first day of school, however, the boy's put most of their energy into
making fun of her. They had laughed at the way she dressed, if she was
pretty or not, and her glasses. How could Jenny forget that first week.
Now it was Sunday and she was depressed, thinking about another week of
school.

"I hope we get canceled," she said to herself, as she turned her light
out and went to bed.

The next day she awoke to her alarm clock, look outside, and knew that
it was a perfect day and she would have to go to school. The sky was a
rainbow. ...

practice. It wasn't as she expected. As she
walked in, all the girls started whispering. Jenny didn't have any doubt
what it was about. All the girls started doing lay-ups and before Jenny
knew it, practice was over. Jenny went to practice after practice and soon
found that she wasn't that bad.

"Okay Pirates," coach announced. "Tomorrow is our first game. Come
over after practice and get your uniform. Remember girls, play hard, have
fun and it's the little things that count."

"Wow," Jenny said to herself. "Our first game is tomorrow."

Jenny went and picked up the uniform. Her jersey looked up at her.
(per) It showed number 42, her favorite number. All the things she had
went through those couple of weeks were now gone. The whispers, the boys,
everything. Now all she could think about was being a part of the team.
Having her own jersey, her own number, these might make her a role model
to kids.
