Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment continually provides insight into broad issues of pride, poverty and suffering through specific scenes that reflect the character’s values, the societal values and how their combination adds meaning to the entire work. Katerina Ivanovna’s funeral dinner for her late husband Marmeladov is a very important scene in the book. It reveals Katerina’s, Sonia’s and Luhzin’s issues of pride, poverty and suffering while giving insight to the values of the society as a whole.

bad manners of the people—but Katerina expected for “everyone” to be present. Only the poorest and most insignificant people came to the dinner, while the more respectable people stayed away. This reality embodies the way society treats impoverished people. It is confirmed further by the actions of Luhzin. Luhzin, thinking he is too good to associate himself with Katerina’s guests, sends Sonia to respectfully announce his absence. Katerina takes offense to the absence of what she considers important guests and starts to get upset. Katerina’s concern with the presence of guests along with having to fight a battle with consumption influences her mental decisions. Her guest saw she was unable to clearly and logically think and took advantage of her hospitality, instead of honoring Marmeladov.
As Katerina gets upset, the guest’s behavior starts to get out of hand. The guests are drunk from the constant serving of wine, vodka and rum. The guests then proceed to talk badly ...
