Crisis intervention nursing is a very important and significant contribution that nurses can make to the wellness of an individual or his family. Prompt or skillful intervention may not only prevent the development of serious long term disability , but may allow new coping patterns to evolve. These include education, and the exploration of feelings and coping behaviors. Normal human response to crisis may be explored. The therapist may facilitate coordination of community support services.

The risk factors of untreated crisis may be suicide or a psychotic episode, or at the least disruption in the persons self esteem, personal functioning and usual patterns of coping.
