David Farragut

On April 19, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln declared a blockade of the Southern coast. To enforce this, David Farragut was promoted to Flag Officer and sent aboard the USS Hartford to command the West Gulf Blockade Squad in early 1862. Charged with eliminating Confederate commerce, Farragut also received orders to operate against New Orleans. Assembling his team of gun boats at the mouth of the Mississippi, Farragut began to approach the city. The hardest obstacles were Forts Jackson and St. Philip, as well as a squad of Confederate gunboats.
