Death Of A Salesman: Linda


In the play Death of a Salesman, a character that doesn’t stand out very much in the play actually has much to offer to the plot - Linda. Linda attempted to perform a good job as a wife and mother, but subconsciously influenced the tragic ending of the play.
Linda can be blamed for Willy’s tragic ending. At the very beginning of the book we see that Willy, originally on his way to Boston, returns home because he was unable to concentrate on the road. Just as he was beginning to figure out why, Linda took his mind off the subject by suggesting that the problem was with the car’s steering and not with his mind. “Oh. Willy becomes discouraged to hear that it wasn’t possible. A build-up of disappointments might be the cause of Willy’s suicide at the end of the play.
Linda not only affects Willy, but also Biff and Happy. Willy repeatedly tells his sons that in order to succeed in the world, they needed to be well-liked. He also taught them that in the business world, a person could start off from the bottom and make it to the top in no time. Linda was present when Willy talked to his sons about these issues, and even knowing that one actually had to work hard to get to the top, she didn’t interfere in Willy’s teachings. For instance, towards the end of the play, Willy sends Biff to talk to Bill Oliver about receiving a huge loan from him. It’s obvious that it’s only a fantasy of Willy’s, yet Linda doesn’t interfere. We see that Biff’s failure to accomplish this brought a disappointment for the family.
