Death Of A Salesmen: Freedom And Willy’s Dream



In the play, Death of A Salesman, the Loman family is living in a lie created by Willy Loman’s dream. Everyone in the family has come to a point where the lie has become a reality for them. The only person who has the courage to be honest is Biff. When Biff is honest with his father and his family he frees the Lomans from Willy’s dream and the dishonesty that it brought on.
Biff was the biggest captive of this dishonesty. He lived his whole life from what his father wanted him to do. Biff first came to terms with the lie his life was when he went to Boston to have Willy get his grade changed. He sees his father with another woman and even worse he gives the woman stockings.

that his father isn’t all that he seems. He is giving his love away to someone other than Linda.
The second thing of significance is the fact that is one instant Biff now doesn’t want Willy to get his grade changed. He thinks that because of the person he now thinks his father is he couldn’t do it. He is completely disillusioned by what he has seen, and his whole concept of who his father is breaks down. His hero image of his father is shattered. He doesn’t believe in his father anymore, because he thinks he is a different person than he perceived him to be.
Until that point in his life everything was for his father. But now he doesn’t believe in his father anymore. Because of this Biff becomes a lost soul. He realizes his father’s life is a total lie. Biff has lived his life according to what his father has taught him and now Biff’s life is a lie also.

But once again Biff if lying to himself, he goes to Oliver’s office expecting to make a deal He goes there to be what his father wants him to be, a business man and a success. Biff is shot down and not even remembered. In a fit of rage he goes into Oliver’s office and steals his pen. He runs down to the street only to realize he doesn’t want this at all.
