Seeing a smile as big as his made it so easy to drop everything for my boyfriend. His white teeth shined with the light hitting them just perfectly. He said, “Thank you; you are the best”. Looking into my boyfriend’s eyes seeing how confident he was, I told myself I made the right decision. Pressured by my boyfriend, I decided -- against the wishes of teammates and family -- not to try out for AAU basketball.

am an athlete; playing basketball is my life. I play basketball year round. I go from playing summer league, to a fall league, to high school season during the winter to AAU. AAU is run in the spring. AAU is an organization that travels to different areas to display talent to college coaches. Junior year of AAU is the most important scouting year for athletes. AAU demands three practices a week and tournaments on the weekends. I would have to travel with the team and stay overnight depending on the distance. I spent so much time during the winter season playing basketball. My boyfriend didn’t want to lose me in the spring to basketball. Not wanting to lose me, my boyfriend and I had a huge talk.
