Torvald just about is what society expects of him. Torvald runs
his household with an iron fist. He is this way most likely because he is
afraid of what might happen if he did not do what the world expected him to
do. He wants society to see him as a respectable man with a great position.
Torvald in fact fires Krogstad because of this: “he thinks that entitles
him to take a familiar air around me. . . .I tell you, it’s been
excruciating for me”(993). Torvald sees his worst nightmare come true when
he finds out that his wife has borrowed money from Krogstad. Instead of
thinking of how much his wife must of loved him to do something like that,
Torvald could only think about how other people will see the situation and
himself. The same thing happens again when Nora tells him that she is
leaving him. Just like Nora depended on Torvald to decide her costume,
Torvald depends on society to set standards for himself.
