I chose the topic of domestic violence because of the impact it has had on me throughout my life and the impact that it has on the community. I have witnessed my mother be abused by my father and other boyfriends. I have been abused by my own father and I have recently just gotten out of my own abusive relationship with my son's father. Abuse is so normalized in the community that I grew up in that it is often not talked about or addressed at all. I grew up believing that fighting with your partner was a "normal" part of a relationship and I often blamed myself for the abuse. When only taking into consideration physical violence experienced by women the statistics are shocking, with 2 to 4 million women being assaulted by their partners per year in the United States. Per the American Medical Association one out of three women will be a victim of violence by a husband or boyfriend at some point in her life. Government statistics show that 1,500 to 2,000 women are murdered by partners and ex-partners per year, making up more than one-third of all female homicide victims.
What is more shocking to me is that only slightly half of intimate partner violence is even reported to law and that is only reporting the "physical" violence. Physical abuse is only the beginning of abuse that women may be subjected to. There are emotional and verbal abuse that women go through as well, that can cause deep and long-lasting wounds that aren't as obvious as a punch or a slap.
