In the play Tartuffe Jean-Baptiste Moliere uses his characters to portray his ideas of the social and political standings of his time. One of the most controversial characters, besides Tartuffe himself, is Dorine. Although she is not a major character she has many traits that are worth mentioning. Dorine has very liberal actions for her time and is not portrayed in a way that women of that time should act. In Tartuffe, Moliere has used Orgon as an example of how the obsessive need to believe can cause man to be taken in by those who would cloak themselves in others wealth, and manipulate people through their beliefs. other women of her time. I believe that it is here that Moliere foreshadows the importance of Dorine's a character. Later on in the play she will play a crucial role in saving Mariane, her counterpart, from marrying Tartuffe, and ultimately saving Orgon's family by bringing about plans to reveal Tartuffe's manipulative and deceitful character. It is important that Dorine is so outspoken because if she were not Mariane would surely have married Tartuffe. Moliere portrays Mariane as a typical woman of the time. One that cannot make decisions for herself and one that is willing to do whatever it takes to make her family or society happy, even if it means putting her own desires or wishes aside. For example, when Orgon tells Mariane of his decision of her marriage to Tartuffe it is apparent that these wishes are clearly against Mariane's desires and that she is disgusted by the idea.
