Drug Life

Drug abuse is a world-wide issue that has consumed millions of people and in several cases, has even been fatal. There are many reasons on how a person can become an addict. Whether it is from peer pressure, a severe trauma, mental illness, or just boredom, everyone has their own issues that can be the cause of their addiction. In this essay I will explore the topics of drug abuse in pregnancy, treating addiction, putting addicts in jail, and the financial burden it puts on us as taxpayers.

a drug or paraphernalia, or if they are distributing drugs. So, the big question to answer is should they be thrown in jail or be sent to a rehab program. Just because a person serves jail time for drugs doesn't mean they will stay clean when they get out. At times they come home worse than what they were. They are not receiving any treatment for the addiction while serving their time. Suffering through withdraws while in jail could possibly be worse than suffering through them on the streets. Kara Dansky, Senior Counsel, ACLU Center for Justice had this to say about imprisoning addicts, "But as with homelessness and mental illness, handcuffs and jail cells haven't made things better and have cost much more than the treatment and services that can." In the end a person serving jail time is more likely to relapse once they are free than an addict coming home from rehab.
