Michals has changed photography in many ways, essentially from breaking away from established photographic traditions. He does not shoot traditional portraits; he shoots photos that push the viewer into examining issues and ideals. His photos are unique, filled with texture, light, and juxtaposition, such as "What is the Universe?" which focuses on the foil-covered cutouts, rather than the image of the man, who is insignificant, just as we are in our own universe. His photos project a different reality, and gave thousands of photographers the freedom to choose their own style of art blended with photography.
