The intent of early American settlers was always to escape British rule and the economic injustices imposed against the common class within. For these settlers gaining their independence and creating a new country was inevitable. Most of the individuals whom were willing to undertake the dangerous journey to America did so mainly seeking new economic opportunities, which were not present in England at the time. But there were other motives at play as well. Many others sought to escape what they viewed as a tyrannical government and others still were seeking religious freedom. in the middle of a civil war and people had begun to despise and distrust the government. They feared for their future and the possibility of no longer having a voice in national policy. For many America had become the embodiment of a land where the injustices they faced in England did not exist and where they could regain some of their basic freedoms. The English civil war reinforced the idea that "freedom" is one of the key traits of all English citizens and what they believe is their birth right.

The early settlers did find a new kind of freedom in America. With England not taking much interest in the day to day operations of the colonies the settlers were free to govern their colonies how they saw fit. They saw that they were able to make it work without British intervention and colonies prospered greatly during this time.
