In Edgar Allen Poe's, The Cask of Amontillado, we are introduced to Montressor, who, for all intents-and-purposes, is considered the protagonist of the story. Most readers, however, equating protagonist with the term "hero," discover that he is anything but, as his plot to murder Fortunato comes to fruition. Oddly enough, Montressor remains mute on the issue, instead, leading the reader to conclude that Fortunato must have done something to him based on his character. In regards to this, Montressor is likely to be one of the last people readers would want to base Fortunato's character off of.

Clearly, Montressor has a vendetta against Fortunato. Because of this, Montressor is inclined to describe Fortunato in a less than appealing way. As Fortunato is first introduced, Montressor is quick to describe his "friend's" appearance, "The man wore motely. He had on a tight-fitting partistripped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells" (para. 4)In other words, he is dressed similar to a jester, an image which is usually un-befitting of someone of Fortunato's status.
