Egalitarian Language


It is virtually impossible to direct language in a way that will
lead us to a more egalitarian society. There are far too many obstacles to
overcome. Beyond the ideas of racism or sexism there is also the running
debate about religion and the nature of people to always want to win. I
believe that we can reach a more tolerant society through teaching and good
parenting, however, I do not believe that we could ever have a true
egalitarian society.
The very idea goes against the competitiveness of human nature. How
can everyone be equal if we are striving to be better than others? People
do not want to be equal they are always trying to be the best. Even our

not only in the world but even just in large cities. The only way to
enforce a law of this kind would be to have microphones in every room of
every building and on every street corner that would detect if an illegal
word was said and issue a ticket of some form, as in the movie Demolition
Man. Ironically, if this was to happen, we still would not be living in an
egalitarian society because our government would not consider us equal
enough to be responsible for our own language. If this kind of system were
to be installed I believe that it would cause an overthrow of the
government and lead to an anarchist society. People are not going to be
told what they can and cannot say. This "language law" would also never be
passed under our government; the first amendment of the constitution
guaranties free speech to all citizens.
